Moon and Moth, 10 x 14 in, metallic watercolor on black watercolor paper
This metallic watercolor painting is based on an experience I had this past summer…I was out watering the garden poppies after sunset, the moon was rising, and I noticed a bright flying specimen hovering quickly above the poppies. At first I thought it was a hummingbird, but its proportions weren’t quite right, and it was light-colored, almost glowing in the moonlight. I realized it was a giant flying night moth! I have never seen a moth so big before. Apparently there are many varieties here in the pacific northwest, so I couldn’t tell what particular kind it was.
